On the Write, LLC, is dedicated to improving written communication in all areas: academics, business, law, and everywhere else. We simply love writing. And we know that the goal of writing should always be to make reading enjoyable and understandable for the audience. For too long, professional and legal writing have been filled with “officialese” and “legalese,” terms and phrases that are unnecessary and mean next-to-nothing to the average reader. Is there a way for writing to be both professional and understandable? Indeed. In fact, here at On the Write, we would argue that writing that is not understandable by its intended audience is the epitome of unprofessional.
But we’re not here only for the professional, business, and legal writer. Our concepts and practices transcend particular fields. While there are specific practices and applications that resonate more with certain fields, there are also general practices that will help anyone improve his or her writing. Our president, Joshua Sheffer, is a life-long student of reading and writing. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from Calvin College before receiving his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Notre Dame Law School. Joshua has practiced law since 2001. He also spent several years as an adjunct professor to undergraduate students teaching, among other courses, legal research and writing and legal drafting. Before starting On the Write, LLC, Joshua was part of a nationwide practice representing victims of school violence, and their families, in jurisdictions throughout the country. He has written briefs and other legal documents to trial, appellate, and supreme courts in multiple jurisdictions, including the United State Supreme Court. He has also presented and written on numerous topics.
